“Sartre was talking about people like you” shirt

Sartre. Sartre. Sartre. Sartre.
Sartre.

EXPLANATION

Jean-Paul Sartre (1905 – 1980) was a French existentialist philosopher, and was the leading figure in 20th century French philosophy. He wrote some philosophical plays, and the best-known one, Huis-clos (No Exit), contains the famous line "L'enfer, c'est les autres", usually translated as "Hell is other people."

The line is a metaphor for the idea in existentialism that everything that is not the "self" is a construct of relative consciousness, and that we prove the existence of the "self" by contrasting it with the "other," and that other people's "self" is the limit of our "self." ... or something like that. Truth is, most people don't understand existentialism, because it will, like, blow your mind.

The good thing is that you can take the line out of context (which was how it got famous in the first place) and have it mean that people are idiots, and hanging around idiots is hell.

"L'enfer, c'est les autres."

- Jean-Paul Sartre
